MODERN ELEGANCE IN BATH’S HISTORIC LANSDOWN CRESCENT
From the hills of Solsbury, amidst the rolling greenery of rural Somerset, the light gold stone of Bath's Palladian palaces glints in the distance. Celebrated by historians and visitors alike as one of the UK’s most important Roman settlements and spa towns, 18th-century Bath experienced an extraordinary artistic and architectural flowering that saw it transform into a province of pleasure for British high society, emerging as a time capsule of Georgian neoclassical architecture and English tradition.
Within the elliptical architecture of Lansdown Crescent, one of the city's most iconic addresses Jason and Nathalie procured and renovated one of the street’s coveted houses and made it their home. Captivated by Bath's composed, almost regal, elegance, the couple decided to put down roots here in the hopes of forging a serene oasis for their family of five as an antidote to the busyness of a life lived between London, New York, Singapore, and Hong Kong. Their residence is the result of an ambitious restoration project that has merged three separate residences into a single dwelling, restoring the integrity of the original structure in a fusion of old and new, enriched by suggestions of Italian design.
The beating heart of the house — where family stories and experiences are gathered and shared — is a Convivium island that defines the kitchen area in the centre of the first-floor room. The island combines the warm hues of Canaletto walnut, used for the doors and storage furniture, with the cool whiteness of the marble countertop and PVD champagne finish, introducing a refined contemporary design vernacular amidst the wood panelling and floral stuccoes, cultivating an atmosphere fluidity and openness in the space.
The marble, wood, and PVD champagne island perfectly embodies the owners' flair for furnishings, beauty and pragmatism.
The house is a seamless marriage of old and new. While the Georgian façade has been preserved in an embrace of its original elegance, the interiors are defined by contemporary furniture and objects of design.
Jason and Nathalie's home spans three levels, with a rear garden that opens up a charming scenic backdrop to the city's architectural panorama. Every detail reveals the balance between the period spirit of mouldings, arches, and decorations — largely preserved and restored in their original imprint — and the precise curation of contemporary furnishings, selected to indulge the owners' passion for Italian design and style.
