A HOME IN HARMONY WITH THE MOUNTAINS

Arclinea Kitchen_Italia_The Blur House_2

Spanning the horizon, the broad lines of this hillside home – which serves as a family retreat for a pair of art consultants – appear to float above the trees of Boulder, Colorado. The property’s owners tasked Studio B Architecture + Interiors with the realisation of a structure that embodies “the simplicity of an art gallery and a strong connection to the surrounding landscape.” The striking design of Blur House is defined by glass walls that extend along both sides of the residence, inviting light to flow into and through the space in all directions, while the natural surroundings are reflected in the metal cladding of the façade. The result is a home that seamlessly and literally blurs into the mountain scenery.

“We wanted to achieve a simple, functional architecture that elevated the main living spaces above the surrounding pine trees and oriented them toward the eastern horizon.”

The lower level of the house, nestled into the hillside, provides the foundation that allows the structure to appear suspended above the landscape. The upper floor forms the heart of the home, with the kitchen, dining and living areas integrated into a single open space. This layout offers breathtaking views and easy access to the terraces, which extend the living area outdoors and feature a pool for relaxation. Studio B’s minimalist design approach, defined by understated elegance, led the architects to select Arclinea’s Italia model for the Blur House kitchen. The composition features a long central island paired with a wall-mounted storage system, offering flawless synergy with the home’s architectural vision.

In keeping with the architect’s emphasis on simplicity and attention to detail, the kitchen’s matte white lacquer finish was selected with the intention to allow nature’s beauty and the colours of the changing seasons to take centre stage when observing them from within the home. For the owners – a family in constant transit between Canada, New York City, and Colorado – the property offers a serene mountain escape and an opportunity to connect with nature. It also acts as a welcoming venue for family gatherings, where the kitchen becomes the backdrop for intimate conversations and the sharing of memories; such as the tale of the lynx that appeared at the door during dinner.

“The philosophy and ethics of Arclinea align with our understated minimalism, where only the essential is visible; elegant, clean and timeless lines that enhance our interior work throughout the home.”
